Chapter Eight

Harp watched as Stevie and Brant unhitched Bob from the sleigh and removed his harness. Once the horse was cooled down and released into the corral next to the old grain shed, Brant asked Harp if he wanted coffee.

“No. I’ll settle for a ride home,” Harp said as the three of them walked toward Brant’s truck. “I’ve got to pack. But I’ll find time to haul some hay over this afternoon along with the cover for the sleigh.” He stopped next to the truck. “I feel better knowing that you two know what to do, just in case the airlines or the weather decides to be uncooperative.” He tilted his head, a self-conscious look crossing his face before he asked, “It is Kara getting married, right?”

Brant and Stevie nodded in unison.

He let out a breath. “I thought so. My daughter texted a while ago and asked me to get the straight scoop. She was sure I’d gotten it wrong.”

“It’s Kara,” Brant said.

“Well,” Harp said, sounding like he was on the edge of embarrassment but still glad he asked, “you two do make a nice couple.”

“Thank you,” Stevie said solemnly.

Brant caught her eye, gave her a look that made her want to smile, but she didn’t because she was working on taking that step back. His eyes narrowed slightly before he got into the truck. Okay. She needed to be friendly, not distant. Friendly, but not flirty.

She needed this wedding to be over.

Stevie headed into the barn after they pulled away to start drilling starter holes for the hooks that would hold the lights and pine boughs along the walls. She had a food bank meeting in an hour, but they’d lost most of the day to the sleigh lessons, and their schedule was tight, so if she could get a couple dozen hooks in, that would make for less work tomorrow.

Of course, she hit a nail first go, breaking the small drill bit. By the time she rummaged through Brant’s tools and found a replacement, he’d returned from dropping off Harp.

“I broke a bit and didn’t get much done,” she confessed when he walked into the barn. “Unfortunately, I need to get back to town for a food bank meeting.”

He shook his head, his mouth curving into the crooked half smile she kind of loved.

Complications.

“Drill bits tend break when you’re in a hurry.” His expression grew more serious. “Is everything all right?”

It was the second time he’d asked today.

She hit the trigger of the drill as it hung from her hand and it gave a low whir. “We’re behind schedule now.”

“That’s it?”

She gave a what-else? shrug, but he didn’t appear to believe her. She needed to work on her poker face. “Time is tight. Twelve days to go.”

“I live here and can catch up,” he pointed out. “As you probably know.”

This little lie of hers wasn’t working out.

Before she could speak, he said, “We’re a day behind hanging lights, but other than that everything is going exactly as we planned.
