Chapter Eight
Harp watched as Stevie and Brant unhitched Bob from the sleigh and removed his harness. Once the horse was cooled down and released into the corral next to the old grain shed, Brant asked Harp if he wanted coffee.
âNo. Iâll settle for a ride home,â Harp said as the three of them walked toward Brantâs truck. âIâve got to pack. But Iâll find time to haul some hay over this afternoon along with the cover for the sleigh.â He stopped next to the truck. âI feel better knowing that you two know what to do, just in case the airlines or the weather decides to be uncooperative.â He tilted his head, a self-conscious look crossing his face before he asked, âIt is Kara getting married, right?â
Brant and Stevie nodded in unison.
He let out a breath. âI thought so. My daughter texted a while ago and asked me to get the straight scoop. She was sure Iâd gotten it wrong.â
âItâs Kara,â Brant said.
âWell,â Harp said, sounding like he was on the edge of embarrassment but still glad he asked, âyou two do make a nice couple.â
âThank you,â Stevie said solemnly.
Brant caught her eye, gave her a look that made her want to smile, but she didnât because she was working on taking that step back. His eyes narrowed slightly before he got into the truck. Okay. She needed to be friendly, not distant. Friendly, but not flirty.
She needed this wedding to be over.
Stevie headed into the barn after they pulled away to start drilling starter holes for the hooks that would hold the lights and pine boughs along the walls. She had a food bank meeting in an hour, but theyâd lost most of the day to the sleigh lessons, and their schedule was tight, so if she could get a couple dozen hooks in, that would make for less work tomorrow.
Of course, she hit a nail first go, breaking the small drill bit. By the time she rummaged through Brantâs tools and found a replacement, heâd returned from dropping off Harp.
âI broke a bit and didnât get much done,â she confessed when he walked into the barn. âUnfortunately, I need to get back to town for a food bank meeting.â
He shook his head, his mouth curving into the crooked half smile she kind of loved.
Complications.
âDrill bits tend break when youâre in a hurry.â His expression grew more serious. âIs everything all right?â
It was the second time heâd asked today.
She hit the trigger of the drill as it hung from her hand and it gave a low whir. âWeâre behind schedule now.â
âThatâs it?â
She gave a what-else? shrug, but he didnât appear to believe her. She needed to work on her poker face. âTime is tight. Twelve days to go.â
âI live here and can catch up,â he pointed out. âAs you probably know.â
This little lie of hers wasnât working out.
Before she could speak, he said, âWeâre a day behind hanging lights, but other than that everything is going exactly as we planned.
